MEDIA NEWS + MOVES

April 6, 2023

1. What's the news?

  • As of Tuesday, just 3% of verified Twitter accounts had subscribed to the paid Twitter Blue plan, as the platform’s sweeping – and unevenly enforced – policy changes continue. Also this week, the site faced pushback for labeling NPR as “U.S. state-affiliated media.”
  • PressPal, a new tool announced by the PR tech platform Muck Rack, will use AI to draft press releases and recommend media targets based on the content.
  • The Financial Times acquired a controlling stake in the medical news publication Endpoints News.
  • With Meta shuttering its Reels Play bonus program and the looming threat of a TikTok ban in the U.S., thousands of Gen Zers are turning to Patreon rival Fanfix to monetize their content.

2. What's trending?

  • Average monthly spending on video streaming services in the U.S. dropped 23% from Q1 2021 to Q3 2022. However, 87% of internet households have at least one streaming services.
  • Journalists’ beats in the U.S. vary widely by gender and other factors, new Pew Research shows. According to a survey of 12,000 U.S. based journalists, women are far more likely to cover health and education.
  • YouTube began integrating podcasts to its Channel pages in an effort to bring users closer to popular podcast playlists, rather than requiring a manual search.
